How to Find a Good English Tutor in Marrakech (and What It Should Cost)

Whether you're a Moroccan professional who needs to stop freezing on client calls, a student chasing an IELTS score, or an expat family looking for lessons for your teenager, Marrakech has plenty of English tutors. Most of them are not good. Here's how to tell the difference in ten minutes.

1. Check the certification, the real ones

2. Native or not?

For grammar foundations, an excellent Moroccan teacher who understands French and Darija interference can be better than a native. For pronunciation, listening, conversation, business calls, and exam Speaking, a native (or native-level, US-raised) speaker makes a measurable difference, you can't learn the flap T and stress-timed rhythm from someone who doesn't have them. The ideal in Marrakech is rare: a native who also speaks French and Darija and knows exactly why you say "I have 30 years."

3. Realistic prices in Marrakech (2026)

OptionMAD / hour
Uncertified student on Superprof/Avito80-150
Experienced Moroccan tutor150-250
Native, Cambridge-certified, one-on-one200-350
Exam (IELTS/TOEFL) or business coaching350-500
Language centre group class (effective, per speaking hour)60-120, but ~4 min of speaking

Anything under 150 MAD for a "native certified tutor" is a red flag. Anything over 500 MAD for general conversation is overpriced unless it's specialised corporate work.

4. Questions to ask before paying

  1. What's your certification, and can I see it?
  2. Do I get notes after each session? (If not, you'll forget 80% within two days.)
  3. How do you measure progress? A real tutor has an answer: level assessment, recordings, mock tests, a plan.
  4. Where do we meet? Gueliz cafés and hotel lounges are standard for in-person; Google Meet for online.
  5. Can I do a paid trial? A free "trial" is usually a sales pitch; a paid one (~150 MAD) is a real diagnostic session.

5. Online vs in person

In person in Marrakech is better for beginners and for accountability. Online is better for busy professionals and works perfectly for pronunciation with a decent microphone. The best tutors offer both and let you switch.
