Living in Marrakech as an Expat: Where Locals Actually Learn English (and How to Find a Tutor for Your Family)

If you've moved to Marrakech, you've noticed that English gets you a long way in Gueliz and the riads of the medina, and almost nowhere else. You've probably also noticed the reverse: your Moroccan partner, your teenager in a French-system school, your riad staff, or your business partner speak some English, school English, but freeze in real conversation. This guide is for expats who need English lessons for someone in their life, or for themselves if English isn't their first language.

Who's actually looking for lessons

What the options look like in Marrakech

Language centres (Gueliz, Hivernage). Group classes of 8-15, mostly British/neutral textbook English, 2,500-6,000 MAD per term. Fine for structure, useless for speaking, about four minutes of talk time per hour.

Marketplace tutors (Superprof, Apprentus, Avito). From 80 MAD/h. Quality is a lottery; certification is rare; most are not native speakers.

Private native tutors. Few and far between. Expect 200-350 MAD/h for a Cambridge-certified (CELTA/DELTA) native, 350-500 for exam or business coaching. This is where real progress happens, especially for speaking and pronunciation. Full price breakdown here (French).

What to look for

  1. CELTA or DELTA (Cambridge), the certifications real language schools require. A "120-hour online TEFL" can be done in a weekend.
  2. Native or native-level, if speaking and accent matter. For grammar foundations a strong Moroccan teacher can be excellent.
  3. Speaks French and Darija, so they can explain to a Moroccan beginner why they say "I have 30 years", and so lessons aren't a wall of incomprehension for an A1 learner.
  4. Notes after every session and some kind of progress tracking. Without it, 80% is forgotten in two days.
  5. A paid trial. Free trials are sales pitches; a paid one (~150 MAD) is a real diagnostic session.

Where lessons happen

In-person lessons in Marrakech typically take place in quiet cafés in Gueliz or Hivernage, at your home, or at your business. Online via Google Meet works well for adults and for pronunciation with a headset; teenagers under 15 do better in person.
