How to Practise English in Marrakech Every Day (Even If You Never Leave the City)

A young Moroccan professional recording a voice note on her phone on a sunny Marrakech terrace

Many people in Marrakech say the same thing: "I understand English, but I cannot speak." The reason is almost always the same. They study English a lot and speak it very little. The fix is not more grammar books. It is a small daily habit of using the language out loud.

The rules that make practice work

A daily routine in five parts

1. One phrase in the morning (3 minutes)

Pick one useful phrase, for example "Let me know if that works for you." Say it out loud three times, then make two new sentences with it. Using a phrase in your own sentence is what makes it stick.

2. Listening on the move (10 minutes)

Use your walk, your taxi or your lunch break. Listen to a short talk, podcast or video at your level. Play a 30-second section twice, then say it back as if you were the speaker. This is called shadowing, and it trains both your ear and your rhythm.

3. A daily voice note (5 minutes)

Open your phone recorder and talk for one minute: what you did today, what you plan for tomorrow, or your opinion about something in the news. Listen back once. Write down one mistake and one sentence you liked. Nobody else needs to hear it.

4. Real English in real life (when you can)

5. Five minutes of reading

Read one short article or a page from a graded reader. Underline three new words and write a sentence with each. Do not look up every word; understanding the general idea is the goal.

FAQ

How long does it take to speak English fluently?+

It depends on your starting level, how often you speak and the feedback you get. Most adults who practise speaking for 20 to 30 minutes a day and have regular feedback notice a clear change within two to three months. Fluency in a demanding area such as business or exams takes longer.

Can I improve without a teacher?+

You can build a lot of vocabulary and listening skill alone. A teacher is most useful for catching mistakes you cannot hear yourself, especially in pronunciation and grammar, so that you do not practise the errors until they become habits.

I am too shy to speak. What should I do?+

Start by speaking alone: record voice notes for yourself. Then speak one-to-one with a patient partner or tutor. Confidence comes from small, repeated successes.
